Welcome to another Art Journal Express – a free video tutorial series where I show you how I created one of my art journal pages from start to finish. Each and every Art Journal Express video tutorial is in “fast forward” mode and then narrated so that you can see each and every step and hear my thoughts behind my process without having to sit through a loooong video.
Whew! I can’t believe another week is over – time seems to be flying at a breakneck pace. So much creating I want to do, so little time!
I actually was actually feeling pretty happy this week because I had the opportunity to spend a lot of time in my studio. Registration for the Stampin’ Up! Holiday Cards 2014 class yesterday over on Paper Crafter’s Library has been going strong so I decided to start working on another online class – this time one that focuses on some mixed media techniques for card makers. I’m pretty excited about the cards I’ve been coming up with and look forward to being able to share some sneaks with you maybe next week.
Last week I also launched a new feature on the Paper Crafter’s Library blog called Keep it CASual – a video series focusing on Clean and Simple Card Making. I was a card maker long before I was an art journaler and my favourite style of cards has always been clean and simple. I love bright colours and lots of white space – which if you’ve seen my art journal pages then you’ll know that I tend towards applying that to my art as well – with just a touch of messy/grungy.
Today’s art journal page was actually inspired by some new supplies I purchased this week from our local art supply store – Liquitex Professional Spray Paint.
If you’ve watched some of my other Art Journal Express Videos then you’ve probably seen me use the black spray paint. I had a can of the black spray paint and white spray paint. I loved using these spray paints so much that I decided to buy a bunch more colours! It works out to about $10.75 CAN per can but as you see in the video the cans are BIG – so it feels like a good investment.
Pretty much from the minute I bought the paints I knew that I wanted to use them with one of my 12″ x 12″ Crafter’s Workshop templates – the question of course was which one (I have lots!). I finally settled on the Fragmented Flower stencil because it had a lot of “space” – I wanted BIG blocks of colour on my page.
There’s actually a funny story about how I ended up with that sentiment for my page because that was NOT my original plan. I was thinking of having a big script-y quote that said “Live Life in Color” – but because of a little mishap my page evolved very differently from how I had originally pictured it. I share that story in the video.

As with all my other art journal pages I have been working in my Dylusions journal. The Dylusions journals are my absolute favourite – they have lots of sturdy pages which hold up really well to all sorts of inks and mediums and embellishments. I always use the right side for journaling and the left side to list the supplies and make notes on what I did in case I want to use the techniques on other mixed media pieces.

I’m relatively new to stenciling with inks & paints. Seems when I spray, the ink or paint seeps under the stencil creating a mess. It almost looks like the Liquitex spray paint you use isn’t as “juicy” as inks. Does the Liquitex spray more “neatly”? Thanks!
HI Donna – for best stencilling results I have found a couple things to be helpful:
1. Make sure your stencil is clipped or taped to your page so that it lays as close against the page as possible.
2. Don’t overspray – there is a delicate balance between spraying enough and spraying too much – comes with practice.
3. If working with ink sprays (not acrylic paint like I used) It helps to keep a roll of paper towels handy to blot the excess.
That said, I have found that some mediums lead to less seepage than others. Of all the different mists, sprays, inks and paints I’ve tried I’ve had the best success with the Liquitex professional spray paints.
